Welcome to the Trick of the Trade Blog Hop!
What’s a blog hop? You hop from blog to blog and fill your brain with little tips.
Along the way, write down the letter you find at the bottom of each blog. Put them together and see what it spells. When you get to the final stop of the hop you can enter that code to win a gift card! What are the gift cards you ask? One lucky winner will earn a $50 gift card to TpT. Two other SLPs will win $15 gift cards!
My tip is for helping your lowest leveled students increase their describing skills. Most of my minimally verbal or AAC users use a lot of functional vocabulary. While functional sentences are important, it also really limits how well they are able to express their opinions and personality. I’ve been focusing on describing items to help the teachers and I learn what they think!
We usually cook on the days I am in the classroom. Food is something easy to describe so we have focused on different food descriptions. First we cooked and ate waffles. Such a great language activity on its own!
Then I took a plate and we drew another waffle on it!
We used the students’ AAC devices to develop adjectives to describe the waffle and say sentences related to it. ‘Yellow Waffle.” “I like waffles” “Waffles are sticky.”
We also looked at the regular lunch menu in their classroom to pick foods to describe. We looked for all the ‘cold’ foods and all the ‘hot’ foods we could find! My students are highly motivated by food so this was a great task!
I hope you find my ‘tip’ useful! Using real food items to describe is the best way I’ve been able to expand language and encourage my life skills classes to increase those good describing words!
