All my fellow Social Detectives have been celebrating for a few months now! Back in April, the folks at Social Thinking and Social Skill Builder got together and made a new Social Detective app.
Social Thinking is a set of tools from Michelle Garcia Winner and the Social Thinking team. If you’re unfamiliar you can read my original review of her ST program.
This app is developed for kids ages 7 – 12. The app uses pictures and videos of children in different scenarios. While it uses some of the same pictures as the original comic book, it doesn’t actually teach the skills with the whole book. It works best as a compliment to the full program and isn’t a substitute to having the series.
Start by picking an avatar. The student has to move through the app in a certain order starting with the expected/unexpected activities. The app teaches children how to use their eyes, ears and brain to make smart social guesses and investigate clues to see how others’ emotions and responses are connected to their own behavior.
The second part of the app is related to perspective taking. Student must rate if an activity or action gives the other person good thoughts or uncomfortable thought. After a short teaching period the person will earn their social thinking hat and move on to the test questions that include a video for each.
· Understanding Others’ Expected and Unexpected Behavior
· Understanding Others’ Comfortable and Uncomfortable Thoughts
· Learning to Use Your Social Tool Box Items (Eyes, Ears and Brain)
· Learning how to make Smart Guesses with your social tool box items
The app allows you to track and share progress by emailing graphs and percentages of outcomes after playing.
Pros: The real life scenarios and video modeling to teach social skills to children with Autism and other special needs. The ability to “re-play” the videos allow social situations to be dissected and time for the SLP to highlight certain actions/behaviors.
Cons: Some of the videos have low audio quality. The background noise made it difficult for one of my students to hear and concentrate.
The Social Thinking App retails for $24.99 in the iTunes store. This app was provided for review. No other compensation was provided. These app-inions (see what I did there?) are mine! You can find other information about the whole program on the Social Thinking website or more information about the app on the Social Skill Builder website.
