I had never heard of the book “Spookley” until this year when I saw Kristin write about the app a while ago. The app is $1.99 in iTunes as of today. I thought it looked great for my younger kids. After I downloaded the app version I realized the vocabulary included would work for all of my elementary caseload! I thought I’d share 10 ways I used it this week. The secret to making your day simple is by using one therapy item in as many ways as you can! 1. Spookely’s Feeings.
Spookley is goes through a variety of emotions in the book. I used this freebie graphic organizer from Peachie Speechie. We sorted emotions throughout the book. It’s difficult for my kids to move past ‘happy and sad’ so we worked on finding other emotions like ‘proud, brave, scared, shy.’
Then we wrote them on on our very own Spookleys! 2. For my grammar students we made ‘is’ and ‘are’ sentences with the Spookley pages. We wrote them on our pumpkins. 3. My language students are working on the EET. We drew the EET on our pumpkins using vocabulary from the book. 4. We drew Venn diagram’s and compared the round pumpkins and spookley in the patch! We also compared the patch at the beginning of the story versus the end! 5. Articulation Spookely was great fun too! We read the book and make lists of words with our sounds found in the book.
Then we added them on our Spookley pumpkins! 6. WH questions! We wrote answers to WH questions from the story working on comprehension 7. Some groups made category pumpkins! We named as many ‘fall’ words as we could! 8. We picked vocab from the book and developed synonym lists.
9. We also made some attribute descriptions (square, orange, soft, etc.) 10. Prediction: We listed situations and our predictions. We underlined context clues that helped us determine that prediction. Whew! 10 easy ways I used it this week! Spookley will be back next year! Have you used this book in your room?!

I just found out about this book this year too! I LOVED it for my preschool speech classroom. We read the book, talked feelings and friendship skills, picked out vocab, worked on shapes and colors, sorted shapes, sequenced, talked similarities/differences…I could have used it for a month!
I am using this app in my room this week as well. We compared and contrasted, answered questions, looked for /s/ blend words, and stated feelings. It has been a great book for a variety of goals. Kristine W
I have mainly 3rd-5th graders- in general-ed classrooms. Do you think the story/app are age-appropriate for them? Thanks!
I’m so glad that the graphic organizer came in handy. I just love Spookley! Have you seen the Thanksgiving Spookley book? The story doesn’t really go with the first one (Spookley is the only square pumpkin again – ?!?) but it is still pretty cute. I’ll probably read it to my students in a couple weeks.
