Where the WIld Things Are: Book Companion

All time favorite book? Mine is Where The Wild Thing Are   I just love it!  {scroll to the bottom for photographic proof of this love} I just want to get into the boat with Max an help tame the wild things.   I whipped up (well, spent 40 hours of work, more like labored and not whipped) a 74 page book companion that works for both preschool and elementary aged students. Here is a sneak peek:  Articulation Cards: 88 articulation cards for S/Z, L, & R. All words are from the book. Use the black and white sheets on pages 14 and 15 for ink dotters or coloring each time the students says their sound or word. Let your students search for their sound in the book using page 16. Pages 3-16. Listening Comprehension: Read the paragraphs included about Sendak and the Caldecott Medal. Answer the comprehension questions. Pages 17-19. Vocabulary: Students match the vocabulary word to the definition. Students match the vocabulary word to its synonym. Use the included worksheets for homework. Pages 20-27. Sequencing/Retell: Use the included cards to sequence and retell the story. Pages 28-30. Use the included worksheets to retell the story and describe the characters. Pages 31-33. EET Page: Use this companion page in conjunction with the Expanding Expression Tool Kit from Sara Smith. Page 34. Adjectives: Complete the given pages that discuss adjectives to describe Max and other characters. Pages 35-37 Compare and Contrast: Use the Venn diagrams to compare characters and settings. Pages 38-40. Five Senses Writing: Describe a wild land by creating an image for your reader. Use your 5 senses to describe it. Page 41. Pronoun/Verb Sentences: Give each student one forest. During his/her turn the student should pull a card and generate a sentence that includes a pronoun and verb, then place the card in the forest. Pages 42-48. Barrier Game/Felt Board: Cut out the given activities. Add Velcro to use them on a felt board for story retell. To use as a barrier game, split the materials between two students. Take turns giving directions and creating scenes from the story. Pages 49-54. Basic Concepts: Name the basic concepts and ask the student to identify the correct card. Pages 55-57. Object Functions/Attributes: Draw a card. Explain how you use each item or what each item does. Then describe other attributes (size, shape, color). Pages 58-62. Dot Pages: Use the dot pages as reinforcers for any speech or language goals. Pages 63-65. Comprehension Questions: Use the cards to target story comprehension. Pages 65-68. What Doesn’t Belong: Have the student identify which picture does not belong. Page 69-73. Game Board: Use the game board with any of the task cards to motivate your students. Page 74.
