10 Favorite Farm Picture Books

Fall is here and it’s time to pull out some favorite farm picture books to read! Having weekly or monthly themes for students in speech therapy makes planning easier plus it gets students excited to learn about different topics and relate those topics to specific times of the year. Having themes such as a farm theme can also increase engagement during speech sessions. There are many different activities you can relate to a theme-such as connecting books, language, fine and gross motor skills.

Over on instagram you can check out these favorite farm books plus also follow along @speechroomlibrary to get tons of book recommendations that go with different themes and holidays, appropriate age levels, language and speech sounds that you can focus on with each book. One of my favorite things to do with my toddler at home is incorporate different themes into our IKEA sensory table. I change these out every so often depending on what we are working on. Here is a list of some taste-safe sensory bin fillers to try that we love.

10 FAVORITE FARM PICTURE BOOKS:

These are my go-to books when I teach about the farm. I like to have a mixture of super simple books and some books with a plot.

  1. Little Blue Truck

By: Alice Schertle

This story is about Blue, a little country truck who gets stuck on a muddy country road while pushing a dump truck. Luckily, he made friends with a pack of farm animals to help him.

Check out this little blue truck toy to help make the story more interactive for a retell. You could pair with this set of farm animals!

  1. That’s Not My Cow

By: Fiona Watts

Young children can meet lots of different cows in this story and bonus-it’s a touch and feel book! Follow the simple, repetitive text right to the final page to find out which cow is the right one – and don’t forget to look out for the little white mouse on every page. You might want to pair this story with That’s Not My Tractor.

  1. Noisy Farm Peekaboo

By: DK

This NOISY book is one of my absolute favorites! Children can lift the flaps to reveal the different farm animals and the animals will automatically make a sound when the flap is lifted!  (The sound is light activated so just make sure you aren’t reading it in a dark room). This story is very interactive and kids usually love it! It is a short, 5 page simple story.

  1. Poke-a-Dot Old MacDonald’s Farm

By: Melissa & Doug

Have you tried poke-a-dot books yet? They might be my favorite kind of books ever. They are perfect for kids with busy hands. On every page there are buttons to “press” and “pop.” The buttons or dots make different sounds depending on how they are poked. These books are great to use with students with limited verbal skills and toddlers to get them to interact with the story.

  1. Duck on a Bike

By: David Shannon

Most know David Shannon as the beloved author of “No David!” and “David Goes to School.” This story is another wonderful off-beat humor story about a duck who decides to try riding a bike and loves it!

  1. Little Blue Truck’s Springtime

By: Alice Schertle

This is another sweet lift-a-flap book about Little Blue Truck and all the sweet baby animals he meets that were just born on the farm.

  1. Barnyard Dance

By: Sandra Boynton

This book is too cute and you can “sing along” if you want or download “The Barnyard Dance Song” by John Stey. It is a cardboard book so it’s perfect for babies all the way to preschoolers.

  1. Moo: Peek-a-Flap

By: Jaye Garnett

Meet all the animals as you peek and explore around a farm! Each scene features a pair of lift-a-flaps with peekaboo surprises. Inside the flaps, you’ll find fun facts about the animals in the artwork.

  1. There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Cow

By: Lucille Colandro

Do you love these stories as much as I do? They are a speech therapist’s dream for a great story to retell! Bonus-this story also rhymes!

  1. Mrs. Wishy Washy’s Farm

By: Joy Cowley

This is a great story to read when learning about animals on a farm for younger students. Mrs. Wishy Washy’s animals decide to run away from the farm to the big city all because she tries to give them baths! They get lost and decide maybe the farm isn’t so bad after all.
