One of the hardest changes in my new job this year has been the age switch! At my old district my caseload was mostly kids 3-8 with a sprinkling of 8-12 year olds. My new job has bumped me up an age bracket! I don’t have any kids younger than 7 on my caseload. They are all 7-14. That means I’ve been searching for good materials to fill up my therapy cabinets! Rockin Reading™Comprehension Game is a new Educational Insights product targeting reading comprehension for children 8+. Disclosure: I was provided a copy of this item for review. No other compensation was provided. Amazon affiliate links are included. This fun game features a tour bus filled with cards for answering comprehension questions covering main idea, reading for details, making inferences, drawing conclusions, using context clues, understanding figurative language, distinguishing fact from opinion, and more. The bottom of the box is the game board. The game board is divided into sections and the student’s move through by correctly answering questions in different sections. Start in the private recording studio and try to reach the Hall of Fame! All the reading passages and questions feature rock and roll topics! Pros: Short passages are perfect for SLPs who need to collect multiple data points on skills like ‘inferencing’ or ‘main idea’ in text. The cards provide a great variety of questions that are not only common core aligned, but often targeted as speech language intervention goals. The questions in this game are really well written. While SLPs sometimes feel like we have to adapt reading comprehension game, these question types are perfect for our typically targeted skills. Cons: The game indicates it’s appropriate for 3rd grade and up, but I found the questions most appropriate for my 4th and 5th grade special needs students. I would love if there were two different levels of difficulty so the game could be used with more of my caseload. You can grab the game on the Educational Insights website or below at Amazon (where it’s actually $2 cheaper!) Educational Insights wants to give away one copy of Rockin Reaching.
