One of the truths of school jobs is that you will have some schools that are glorious and full of supplies straight from a Lakeshore Learning catalog and others still using the same desks from 1985. You might be ready for a desk remodel like I was! When there are few precious resources (tax payer dollars) to spend, desks and bookshelves are often the last to be replaced. I’d rather have new testing supplies than a new desk and I’m guessing you agree. But what does an SLP do to spruce up a space?
Use contact paper to cover any service that is ‘blah’. This old shelf has seen better days. It’s in my office and the only part I regularly have to look at is the top of it. After looking at the damage from strips of tape pulled off year after year, I finally had enough. Contact paper is a perfect solution because there is no-mess and you can easily remove it.
You can grab the contact paper at any big box store or on Amazon (affiliate link). It costs less than $7 for a huge roll. We’ve used it to make labels, cover shelves, etc.
Tell me what you’ve covered in contact paper to hide something hideous!

I did the contact paper remodel with one of my bookshelves. You know, one of those cheap fiber board ones? It turned very cute. I have another of those shelves and leftover contact paper so it will probable get the same treatment.
I once covered a table with pages from a derelict “Where’s Wally” book! And my therapy room chairs were found on the footpath in front a child care centre. They were throwing them out. I just resprayed the rusty legs, added rubber caps on the ends and ta-da, perfect chairs. Then there’s the Ikea placemats as deco on the walls!
Cute idea!
